How to Tell If Your Tracking Is Actually Working

October 5, 2026

The two failure modes

Tracking breaks in one of two ways. Either it stops firing and your numbers quietly go to zero, which is usually noticed fast because the drop is obvious. Or it keeps firing, but on the wrong thing, counting page views as leads, or counting every visit to a thank-you page whether or not a form was actually submitted. The second kind is the dangerous one, because the dashboard still shows activity, so nothing looks broken.

A five-minute test you can run yourself

Open your site in a private browser window so nothing is cached or already logged in. Go through your own conversion path exactly as a customer would, filling out the real form or going through the real booking flow with a test name you will recognize. Then check whether that single action shows up, once, in your ad platform and your analytics tool.

If it does not show up at all, tracking is not connected. If it shows up more than once, something is double counting, maybe firing on both the form page and the thank-you page. If it shows up correctly, you have confirmed the one path you tested, which is a good sign, though it is worth testing every form or booking path on the site this way, since one can work while another silently does not.

Why this breaks quietly over time

Tracking is not something you set up once and forget. A website redesign can move a form to a new page without moving the tracking code with it. A new cookie consent tool can block a tag without anyone noticing. A plugin update can change a page's structure just enough that a tag stops firing. None of these show up as an error message. They show up as a number that is quietly lower than it should be, which gets explained away as a slow season long before anyone checks the tracking itself.

What good tracking actually buys you

When tracking is right, the bidding system behind your ads is optimizing against your real outcomes, not a guess. You can trust a campaign that looks like it is working, and trust turning off one that does not, instead of making that call on gut feel. It also means that when someone finally does look at your account, the data they are looking at is telling the truth, so the advice that comes out of it actually applies to your business.

Get a second pair of eyes on it

If you have never specifically checked whether your tracking survived your last website change, it is worth the five minutes above. If you would rather have it checked properly, alongside everything else in the account, a full tracking and account review covers this as a matter of course, not an afterthought.
